Pregnancy is divided into three trimesters, each roughly comprising three months. Here’s what you can generally expect during each month of pregnancy:
First Trimester (Months 1-3):
- Month 1: You might not even know you’re pregnant yet. The fertilized egg implants into the uterine wall. You may experience fatigue, breast tenderness, and changes in your appetite.
- Month 2: Key organs and body systems begin to form in the fetus. You might experience nausea (morning sickness), frequent urination, and mood swings.
- Month 3: The embryo is now officially a fetus. You may start to show signs of pregnancy, such as a growing belly and breast changes. Nausea and fatigue might continue.
Second Trimester (Months 4-6):
- Month 4: The fetus’s organs and systems continue to develop. You may start to feel baby movements (quickening). Morning sickness typically improves.
- Month 5: The baby’s sex can often be determined through ultrasound. You may experience more energy and less nausea. You’ll begin to show a visible baby bump.
- Month 6: Your baby’s skin becomes covered in a fine layer of hair (vernix). You may feel stronger fetal movements. Some women experience “pregnancy glow.”
Third Trimester (Months 7-9):
- Month 7: The baby’s lungs and other vital organs are still maturing. You might feel more tired and experience backaches. Preparing for labor and delivery begins.
- Month 8: The baby continues to gain weight. You may have trouble sleeping and may need to urinate frequently. You’ll likely have prenatal check-ups more often.
- Month 9: The baby is fully developed and ready for birth. You may experience Braxton Hicks contractions. Preparing for labor, finalizing the birth plan, and packing the hospital bag are typical.
It’s important to note that individual experiences during pregnancy can vary greatly. Not all women experience the same symptoms or at the same intensity. Regular prenatal check-ups with your healthcare provider will help monitor the baby’s development and your health throughout pregnancy. They can also provide guidance on what to expect during each month of pregnancy and address any concerns or questions you may have.
